PERFECT, GENUINE, COMPLETE, CRYSTALLINE, CLEAR
(RE-MAKE OF APOCALYPSE NOW) – 2008
The dialogue of the 1979 movie – Apocalypse Now – played out on Amsterdam’s Amstel River by actors who had studied ‘method acting’. The project forms a performative body of work including text, video and photography. The background to which consists of an analysis of the nature of modern-day imperialism as it operates through the media to convey its predominance – even when in the guise of criticism.
One variation of the work is in the HDV format, where the footage is played in real time, alternating between two cameras and including footage from in between takes, such as mood shot of actors in character and of crew. This version includes all the rehearsals and re-takes of the actors’ lines, but mutes the sound of the footage that does not contain lines from the script of the boat’s crew.
